Microbiology - Back to Basics Series

Introduction to Microbiology

Microbiology is the study of organisms that are considered too small to be seen by the naked eye i.e. microscopic. These microscopic living organisms include viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, moulds, protozoa and prions.

This course is aimed to introduce the participant to the fundamentals of microbiology including understanding the different types of microbes, their basic needs and requirements, their basic biochemical requirements, how microbes replicate and grow, the survival strategies of microbes, the benefits of microbes in areas such as medicine, food production, the environment, drinking water and the roles they play in public health, the environment and industry as a whole.

The course consists of lectures, seminars, laboratory demonstrations and also hands-on practical experiments.

Introduction to Biofilms

The formation of a biofilm is a natural phenomena which involves attachment of microbes onto a surface or to each other. Biofilms have been reported to be associated with over 65% of all hospital acquired infections and over 80% of all human infections. The surface that microbes attach onto can be living or non-living. Once the microbes have attached onto a 'surface' they multiply and become encased within a support matrix that is composed of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, metal ions and DNA. This matrix is referred to as the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS).

This course is aimed to introduce the participants to the fundamentals of biofilmology including what a biofilm is, how biofilms form, the benefits and detrimental effects of biofilms, the financial impact of biofilms and the methods that are employed to either enhance the formation of biofilm for beneficial effects or the methods that are employed for the prevention, management and control of biofilms.

The course will look at the different types of industries and sectors that biofilms have a major impact on. The course consists of lectures, seminars, laboratory demonstrations and also hands-on practical experiments.

Introduction to Antimicrobials and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

An antimicrobial is referred to as any substance, be it natural or synthetic that is able to inhibit or kill microorganisms. Examples of antimicrobials include antibiotics, disinfectants and antiseptics. This course is aimed to introduce the participants to the fundamentals of antimicrobials including the different types eg an antibiotic is an antimicrobial but not all antimicrobials are antibiotics, their basic mode of actions, their features and benefits and the roles they play in public health, the environment and industry as a whole.

In addition, the course will look at the role of antimicrobials and antibiotics and the issues of antimicrobial resistance. We will cover the basic definitions and how the emergence and spread of resistance occurs. Furthermore, the course will cover how microbes become resistant and how this can be reduced or controlled and provide the course participants with helpful insight as to how antimicrobial resistance and tolerance are related and the role that biofilms play in the growth and dissemination of antimicrobial resistant bacteria.

The course consists of lectures, seminars, laboratory demonstrations and also hands-on practical experiments.

Introduction to Biofilms in Medicine and Industry

Biofilms - Back to Basics Series

Introduction to Biofilms

Microroganisms exist in two phenotypic states - the free floating or planktonic state and the sessile or attached stage. In fact in any environment 99% of all bacteria are attached onto something. This course will provide the participants with fundamental information as to how biofilms form, proliferate and disseminate.

Methods used to control biofilms will be discussed within this course as will numerous case studies to highlight the worldwide problems of biofilms. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, laboratory demonstrations and also hands-on practical experiments.

Biofilms in the Water Industry

Biofilm growth on pipes in a potable water system is a natural phenomena. However, when biofilm grow inside pipes they have the ability to allow for the growth of pathogen and problematic microbes that are a concern to public health.

This course will provide the reader with the fundamentals of water microbiology and biofilms.

Biofilm Control in Healthcare and Medicine

Biofilms have been reported to be associated with over 65% of all hospital acquired infections and 80% of all human infections and diseases. This course will provide the participants with all the fundamentals of biofilms and their control in healthcare and within many medical conditions. Information will be provided on up to date academic research that is taking place to control biofilms and preventing their formation in the first place.

The course consists of lectures, seminars, laboratory demonstrations and also hands-on practical experiments.

5D International Course - Introduction to the Fundamentals of Microbiology and Biofilms: Related to Health & Medicine

Main Course and Workshop

At 5D we are running a number of courses and always developing new ones for our customers. Examples of courses we are running at the moment are shown below.

Introduction to the Fundamentals of Microbiology and Biofilms

Microbiology is the study of living organisms (microorganisms) that cannot be seen by the naked eye. When microorganisms stick to each other and/or a surface and become encased in sugars and proteins, they are called biofilms. Biofilms impact many industries, both beneficially and detrimentally.

Biofilms are central to many of the major global challenges and issues society is faced with, including clean and safe food and water, infectious diseases and chronic infections, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), consumer wellbeing, medical device related infections and hospital acquired infections.

In medicine in particular, infections and chronic conditions that are associated with biofilms are very challenging to manage and eradicate.

Aims of the Course

The 4-day CPD accredited course ‘Introduction to the Fundamentals of Microbiology and Biofilms: Related to Health & Medicine’ aims to introduce participants to the fundamentals of microbiology and biofilms relevant to medicine and human health.

A series of lectures, tutorials and hands-on practical exercises will provide the participants with useable knowledge on the fundamentals of biofilms, microbiology, antimicrobials and the biofilm models that are employed to study biofilms. In particular, the participants will gain experience of how-to setup many different biofilm models that are used routinely to evaluate the efficacy of medical devices and antimicrobial agents. Whilst the course is focused on the medical and health concerns of biofilms, in particular wound healing, the fundamental knowledge and skills gained throughout the course will be transferable to many different industries.

This course can be run over 4 days or 2 days depending on the customer needs. To discuss your training and educational needs please contact us at info@5Dhpg.com or call on +44 (0) 151 794 9279.
